During my first week back at ONU, I found out that my schedule was tightly packed with only an hour for lunch.
The only way that I have time to eat is by going to the McIntosh Center dining hall, dubbed “Mac.” I soon found out that getting food during my hour lunch would be more difficult than I previously thought.
I have to walk from Dukes to Mac to get my lunch. That is an issue because I never get there before noon. Noon seems to be the prime time for lunch with the line reaching as far back as the mail room and continuing to get longer by the second. It is a hindrance not only to those waiting in it but also to those who are trying to pass through the halls.
Sometimes, I’m in the line for about 10 minutes, and once it’s my turn, I find out only one person has been swiping cards the entire time. Sometimes, there is another person helping dining service employee, Jeannie Blevin, but more often than not, it is just her.
During busy times, such as noon, there should be more than a single person working. This would improve the line and get students on their way quicker.
Once in the dining hall, I find myself having to rush to get food to make it to my next class on time. This is a common case among students who have full schedules. Some students may find themselves struggling to fit food into their hectic schedules.
This should not be a decision students have to make, and, unfortunately, students usually choose class over food.
I love ONU and all of the staff members of the dining hall, but there needs to be more than one person swiping meal cards during these popular times. There are many students on campus, like me, who have very limited time in their day. A second cashier would not only help the single person work- ing but also speed up the line.
