After over a decade of constant use by Ohio Northern athletes, Kerscher Stadium was in need of a serious refresher for the 2024 fall season.

While the stadium was originally built in 1989, Kerscher had been modernized in 2013 to feature artificial turf, outdoor lighting, a scoreboard, and seating for a crowd of 400+ spectators. Such renovations boosted the athletic programs hosted at the university, including soccer, lacrosse, and outdoor track and field.

Eleven years of wear and tear has prompted the university to install new turf on the field, which includes a revamped design that addresses the needs of all sports that inhabit the space. The vibrant colors emphasize the beloved mascot, Klondike, featured in the center and brings new life to the once-faded greenery.

“We are excited to have the Kerscher Stadium turf project completed,” remarked Tom Simmons, ONU Athletic Director. “Thanks to donor generosity, our athletes are playing on a very high quality field. It’s important as well to thank the administration for supporting the project and the commitment to doing it right. This new field is a tremendous improvement.”

The men’s team initiated the first official home game on the new turf this past Sunday as they defeated Oberlin College 4-0. The women’s team followed their lead as they beat Rose-Hulman 3-0 later in the afternoon.

Ohio Northern’s soccer teams now begin a new era of athletics on Kerscher Field. These victories are a strong start for the Polar Bears to begin the soccer season.
