The Writing Lab, a new service hosted by Ohio Northern’s Writing Center, first opened its doors for student use on Tuesday, August 24th 2021.
Students are encouraged to visit and write during the Writing Lab’s open hours, 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. There will be a general writing center tutor available during those times with a label at their desk.
“Writers benefit a great deal when they can apply the feedback they receive on the spot, which is exactly what the Writing Lab enables writers to do,” said Dr. Justine Post, Director of the Writing Center. “By giving feedback right when a student encounters an issue, Writing Lab tutors can help make the writing process more efficient and more effective for writers.”
This service is meant to create a safe physical space with a supportive atmosphere where students can work freely and ask questions if they need help. “Writing in a space with other writers can help students focus on their writing and motivate them to be more productive” said Dr. Post. The students are allowed to come and go as they please, so there’s no pressure if they need to leave for other activities.
Having the Writing Lab means there’s an alternative option for Ohio Northern University students to receive writing help if they need quick help right away, if there are no formal appointments available at the student’s convenience, or if they would simply enjoy having a quiet space to work.
In addition, Dr. Post said “if a student is uncertain how to schedule a tutoring appointment or nervous about going to the Writing Center, I hope they will find the Writing Lab to be a comfortable and accessible space they can stop by any time they want writing support.”
The Writing Lab is located in Heterick Memorial Library room 102 and is open from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday.
