A Rubi Affair is the annual Drag show that Open Doors does with the Rubi Girls out of Dayton. A raffle also runs alongside the event and all proceeds from the entire event go to Equitas Health for HIV/AIDS research. This year due to COVID, the show was held virtually and the Rubi Girls couldn’t make it in person, but they were kind enough to share videos they did over the summer with Open Doors to put in between the student performers. The show was filmed the evening of March 10, 2021 and aired on Saturday, March 13, 2021. The raffle is still ongoing and the winners will be picked on March 25 during our weekly virtual meeting.

This year, there were four lovely student performers: Madeline Rocks: a.k.a. Matthew Garcia, Sage Love: a.k.a. Jacob Park, Luna Blue: a.k.a. Nick Beiser, and Dutchess Dauntless: a.k.a. Mason W. Each gave a stupendous performance that were truly sights to see. There were four judges, three were professors here at Ohio Northern University, and the fourth was a representative from PFlag. PFlag is a national organization uniting parents, family, and allies with the queer community. Our judges were Dr. Lauren Logan, Dr. Jennifer Moore, Dr. Albertina Walker; and our PFlag judge was Frank Valenti. The wonderful judges picked the fantastic Miss Madeline Rocks as their choice, while the audience picked the venerable Miss Sage Love.

Open Doors is the LGBTQ+ group on campus. They meet Thrusdays at 6pm online. They work to foster a safe, inclusive space for LGBTQ+ individuals and allies on campus. While this year’s A Rubi Affair was a success, Open Doors hopes that the next one will be held in person once again.
