What an Olympic Games this has been.
It is South Korea’s first time hosting the Winter Olympics, and it has not been boring. First, North Korea agreed to participate in the Games. The countries also agreed to march as a united “Korea” in the opening ceremony,which prompted some backlash. Mike Pence didn’t stand for the Korea’s united front. Interestingly enough, he assumed a strong stance against kneeling during the National Anthem in the NFL.
But America has been going strong in the Games. As of February 18, the United States has five Gold medals, three Silver, and two Bronze medals. Not bad. A highlight of the Olympics has definitely been figure skating Olympian, Adam Rippon. Being openly gay, Adam Rippon drew attention from his calling out of Mike Pence and his comments that have been refreshing and creative at times. Adam Rippon went to help the men’s team receive a bronze medal, but honestly he deserves a gold medal for just being himself. He was supposed to be NBC’s correspondent for the Olympics but ultimately broke everyone’s hearts when he ended up declining.
Even though America is on track to do terrible in medaling, the Olympics are anything but boring. Shaun White made his comeback in snowboarding, receiving a gold medal. His score of 97.75 is the highest for the men’s halfpipe.
All in all, the Olympics is a good reminder that the America is capable of getting along with the rest of the world.
There may be a little bit of politics here and there, but other than that, it has been nice to tune into America competing for the gold. It’s like watching a sports game every night, but instead of cheering for a team that’s from your state, it’s your country.
The Olympic Games remind everyone that the world is capable of getting together without war. It reminds people that countries are not only countries with world leaders but also countries with actual citizens who we may like. It reminds us that we are human, and our ‘enemies’ are human, too. It is not just politics that run the world. It’s people.
It seems like politics do not run the Olympics.
It’s refreshing to watch something and not see people throw insults.
Instead, it’s people debating scores—not politics. I am all for talking about politics, but sometimes, you need a break. Sometimes, you just want to cheer on America and watch the world compete for gold. The Olympics could not have come at a better time. It is time that America focused on something other than politics for a while. We can all focus on coming together to cheer on our country and sit back and enjoy the show.
But once the Olympics are over, it’s back to business as usual.
